Szachy tartacznego ogrodu..

Czasem przypałęta sie taka myśl i nie chce odejść. I nie wiesz po co bo to totalne szaleństwo, ale wiesz, ze masz tę myśl wykonać!
Czemu szachy? Należałoby zapytać tę myśl. Ale ona po prostu przyszła ,wbiła się w moje serce pełnym pasji pragnieniem i ochoczo zagrzewała do tworzenia.
Pojęcia mnie miałam ile czasu i energii będą mnie kosztować ogrodowe szachy ale zanim się pojawiły ja wiedziałam, że staną w moim ogrodzie.
Po wielu latach na wspólnej ścieżce, mój mąż już nie pyta dlaczego i po co , tylko jak może pomóc. Wie, że kiedy dorwie mnie marzenie ,to i tak zrobię to co mówię.
Przepatrzyliśmy nasz poziomy las w poszukiwaniu idealnego materiału i znaleźliśmy jeden topolowy pniak , który ukrywał wszystkie figury. Z pomocą tartacznej ekipy , przygotowaliśmy 32 półmetrowe kantówki o przekroju 20/20 cm. A nawet trzydzieści cztery .. tak gdyby dłuto się omskło 😉 . Zapakowałam drewno na taczkę i ,z najwyższym entuzjazmem, powiozłam do pracowni..
Topola? Idealny materiał !
Dlaczego wybrałam topolę? Ma duże przyrosty roczne a to oznacza , że łatwo będzie znaleźć duży pień, w którym zmieszczę pionki pomijając rdzeń drzewa. (dlaczego w tokarstwie pomijamy rdzeń dowiesz się na warsztatach tu )
Jest to drewno nie gęste (o mniejszym ciężarze właściwym) czyli ma mniej włókien. Mokre ,zawiera olbrzymie ilości wody ale też szybko schnie. A to dlatego , że występująca mokrym drewnie tzw. wolna woda (ta która sprawia, że czuć wilgoć dotykając drewno) bardzo szybko opuszcza materiał.. I ja to poczułam całą sobą. Obarcająca się na tokarce kantówka zrobiła mi prysznic gdy tylko dłuto dotknęło mokrego jak gąbka drewna.. i tak 32 razy :). Kolejne etapy suszenia załatwia czas i stopniowe zmniejszanie warunków wilgotnościowych. I tutaj też topola jest łaskawa.. zabezpieczona olejem schnie bez pęknięć i wypaczeń. Żaden pionek nie popękał.
Ostatnim atutem topoli jest wspomniany nieduży ciężar właściwy czyli lekkość drewna po wyschnięciu, I to było ważne bo mokry pionek ważył 10 kg a suchy około 5 😉
Po pierwszym ruszyła lawina pionków i figur..
Pierwsze toczenie było emocjonujące bo wzór z głowy miałam narysowany tylko na kratce .. następne wyskakiwały już dużo szybciej. Ze względu na wagę i gabaryt , jeden pionek toczyłam 40 minut. To był crossfit jakich mało.. ale przynajmniej moje mięśnie zapamiętały , że dźwigamy z przysiadu .
Jak już wspomniałam , wolna woda z topoli zalała mnie całą i wszystkie ściany ale przecierałam tylko szybkę maski i go ! Gotowe pionki lądowały w wiórach gdzie się osuszały.
Cały proces zamieszczałam na mediach społecznościowych.. naprawdę dużo osób kibicowało 🙂 Dzięki wielkie. Wykończenie ostatnich figur- króla i królówki i publikacja dumnego zdjęcia , zbiegło się z koronacją króla Karola.. i bach ! I media społecznościowe inaczej odczytały moją ekscytację. Pierwszy w życiu ban na instagramie dostałam w „nagrodę ” za skończone szachy 🙂
Po przeschnięciu , pionki czekało olejowanie. Ja wiem, że topola jest chłonnym drewnem , przez te swoje włókniste , luźne włókna ..ale ilość oleju jakie wciągnęły pionki była niebywała. Lałam jak w gąbkę a drewno piło i piło. Po trzech rundach i 10 l. oleju , ujrzałam warstwę.
Wiosną 2023r. w ogrodzie zrobiliśmy z chodnikowych płytek szachownicę i szachy ogrodu tartacznego się stały! .
” to co myslisz- tworzysz, to co czujesz- przyciągasz, to w co wierzysz- staje sie twoją rzeczywistością”.
Każdy człowiek ma swoj model ,w którym dobrze manifestuje. Jedni działają ściśle wegług planu, inni bezpiecznie i boja sie ryzykować .. ja odpalam twórczy proces z pełnym zaangazowaniem i ufam , że plan przyjdzie. I przychodzi. Zawsze. Bo to co przychodzi przychodzi , jest dla nas , nie przeciwko nam.
Tak tez było w przypadku szachów. Dzieciaki przyjeżdżające do tartaku na wycieczki , spędzają większość wolnego czasu przy szachownicy . Może któregoś dnia nauczą i mnie.

Huge, wooden chess
Sometimes a thought would cling to me and just won’t go away. You’ve got to do it – you
don’t know why, it’s totally crazy – but you’ve got to!
Why chess? You should ask my thought. But this thought just came to me… It entered my
heart, filled it with passionate desire and warmed me up making me creative…
I had no idea how much time and energy it takes to make garden chess but before the work
even began I knew that chess must be a part of my garden!
After many years of following the same path my husband doesn’t ask: why?what for? He
asks: how can I help? He knows that once a dream takes hold – I have to follow it, no matter
what.
We searched our flat forest looking for a perfect material and found one poplar trunk – the
dwelling place of all the chess pieces. With the help of our sawmill team we prepared 32 half
meter scantlings with cross section 20/20 cm. Actually there were 34 scantlings in case my
chisel went awry… I packed the scantlings on the wheelbarrow and brought them happily to
my workshop.
Why have I chosen poplar wood? This kind of wood has big annual rings which means it
should be easy to find a bark big enough for producing all the chess pieces without touching
the pith.(Why we do not touch the pith while turning wood? – you’ll get the answer to that
during woodworking classes here)
Poplar is a medium-density wood – it has loose fibers. Wet poplar wood contains gigantic
amount of water but it dries quickly. That is becaouse the „free” water inside the wet wood
(you feel it when you touch the wood) leaves the material very quickly – as I discovered for
myself! So I began turning the first scantling on the lathe… As soon as the chisel touched the
wet sponge like wood, I got a free shower… Multiply it by 32:-) The wood dried thanks to
passing of time and elimination of humidity around it. Poplar wood once again showed its
kind nature: protected by the oil it dried without cracks and disfigurements. Not even
one chess piece was misshapen!
The last advantage of poplar wood is the mentioned above low density. The wood becomes
lighter when it is dry. It was very important – the wet piece weighed 16 kg, the dry piece
weighs only 4 kg!.
First turning was very emotional – I drew the piece’s shape on a piece of paper… Next
pieces were turned faster. Because of the wood’s weight the turning of each piece lasted 40
minutes. A crossfit like no other! At least I learned that you have to squat when you lift
something heavy.
As I mentioned before, the free water from poplar wood made me wet. The walls around
me became wet as well. But I just cleaned the screen of my mask and kept going! The ready
chess pieces landed in the wood shavings and the drying process began.
I filmed the whole adventure and posted it on Social Media. A lot of people gave support:-)
Thank you so much! Finishing the last chess pieces – the king and the queen and posting the
proud picture coinsided with the coronation of king Charles III and… boom! Social media
misinterpreted my excitement! For the first time in my life I got an instagram ban… for
making chess pieces:-)
After drying the pieces went through the process of oiling. I am aware that poplar wood is
highly absorbent due to its loose fibers. But the amount of oil it absorbed was unbelievably
huge! I poured the oil and the wood drank and drank as if it was made of sponge… After 3
rounds – I used 10 liters of oil – I finaly saw the approperiate layer.
In the spring of 2023 we made the chessboard in the garden using the pavement tiles and
the pieces stood proudly on it…

Each person has their own model in which they manifest well. Some people operate strictly according to the plan, others are safely and afraid to take risks. I start the creative process with full commitment and trust that the plan will come. And it comes. Always. Because what comes comes is for us, not against us.
This was also the case with chess. Kids who come to the sawmill for trips, spend most of their free time at the chessboard. Maybe one day they’ll teach me too.
